1. 2002 Seoul International
Intellectual Property Conference was held October
12
to 15
AIPPI Korea, in association with
LES (Licensing Executive Society) Korea, successfully
held the 2002 Seoul International Intellectual
Property Conference in the Westin Chosun Hotel,
Seoul from October 12 to 15, 2002. Over 260 people
from 25 countries attended the conference including
150 Korean participants.
Under the theme of "Intellectual Property
and Licensing," 23 speakers presented valuable
information during 5 sessions. On Sunday, October
13, in the first session, 6 topics on the
"Issue of New Trends in Intellectual Capital"
were discussed. The speakers included Thierry
Sueur, president of LES International 2001/2002,
Mr. Vincenzo M. Pedrazzini, Secretary General
of AIPPI Switzerland, Mr. Jurgen Schmid- Dwertmann,
Special Adviser to the Director General of WIPO,
Mr. Rodney De Boos, former president of LES International
1997/1998, Mr. David Braunstein, Vice President
of Fairfield Resources International, Inc. and
Mr. Heinz Goddar, former president of LES International
1999/2000.In the second session, 5 issues entitled
"Valuation of Intellectual Property"
were presented by Mr. Hideki Ohtuyama, president
of PLX Co., Ltd, Mr. Melvin F. Jager, Brinks Hofer
Gilson & Lione, Mr. Zhongjun Zheng, Zhongzi
Law Office, Patrick O'Reilley, Finnegan, Henderson,
Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, Professor Karl
F. Jorda, Franklin Pierce Law Center.On Monday,
October 14, in the third session, 5 topics on
"Licensing strategies on Intellectual Property"
were discussed.
Speakers, including Mr. James R. Sobieraj, president
of LES USA/Canada 2002/2003, Mr. Masashige Ohba,
Ohba, Ozaki & Shimasue, Mrs. Beatrice Leigh,
GlaxoSmithKline, Mr. Jai-wook Lee, Oracle Korea,
Ltd, Mr. Luigi Saglietti, Saglietti & Associati,
gave interesting and informative speeches.
In the fourth session, 4 issues regarding "Trademarks
and Trade Dress" were discussed. Speakers
included Mr. Clark W. Lacket, King & Spalding,
Mr. Luis Bazy Baz, Elzaburu, Mr. Georges Nahitchevansky,
Fross Zelnick Lehrman & Zlssu, P.C., Mr. Jae-beom
Park, BBDO/Dongbang.
In the fifth session, 6 topics in "Information
Technology & E-Commerce" were addressed
by the speakers including Mr. David Hill, Finnegan,
Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, Mr.
Tae-Yeon Cho, Cho & Parthers, Mr. Michael
Lechter, Squire, Sanders & Dempsey, Mr. Su-Deok
Jang, Vice President & General Counsel of
Information & Telecommunications I.P. Association
(ITIPA), Mr. Alfred Chaouat, Thomson Multimedia.
On Tuesday, October 15, the LES Pan-Asian Meeting
was led by speakers including Mr. Yoon-bae Kim,
Chair of LES International Pan-Asian Committee
and Masashi Kurose, vice chair of LES International
Pan-Asian Committee.
The Industrial Sector Meeting was also added on
Tuesday, October 15 to discuss the Korean Automobile
and IT and E-Commerce Industries. In the Automobile
Industry Sector Meeting, the history of the Korean
automobile industry was introduced.
Also, covered was the remarkable development of
production and exports, which led to Korea gaining
a ranking of No. 5 in the world wide automobile
industry.In the IT and E-Commerce Sector Meeting,
topics on (a) Semiconductor-Industry, (b) Computer
Industry and (c) Introduction of the IT Business
were discussed. On the last day of the conference
on October 15, 2002, the conference participants
visited the KIA Automobile factory in Hwasung
and the Samsung Electronics factory in Suwon as
a part of the Industrial Inspection Tours.The
workshop leaded by Mr. Yoon Bae Kim, President
of AIPPI-Korea, Mr. Duk Yul Back President LES-Korea
and Dr. Heinz Goddar former President of LES International.

2.The Third Joint Meeting
with AIPPI Big Three in the Asian Region
Followed by the 1st Joint Meeting with AIPPI
Big Three in the Asian Region in Tokyo Japan in
2000 and 2nd in Beijing, China, 2001.The Third
Joint Meeting with AIPPI Big Three in the Asian
Region was also successfully held on October 10-12,
2002 at the Westin Chosun Hotel, Seoul, Korea.
The meeting was co-hosted by AIPPI Japan, China
and Korea.
On 10th of October, there was Opening Reception
at Westin Chosun, Seoul. 70 participants attended
and two speakers from each group presented the
following issues in two sessions; And the following
4th Joint Meeting with AIPPI Big Three will be
held in 2004, in Tokyo because the AIPPI EXCO/FORUM
will be held in 2003, in Seoul.

there was a tour to Kangwha-Island with about
30 persons

Joint Meeting on September 12, 2002
The officers and Board Members of AIPPI Korea
and Members of 2003 AIPPI EXCO/ FORUM Organizing
Committee jointly held a meeting on September
12, 2002 in Kangnam, Seoul for the preparations
of forthcoming events such as the 2003 AIPPI EXCO/FORUM,
2002 Seoul I.P. International Conference and the
Joint Meeting with AIPPI Big Three.
4.The Officers of AIPPI Korea met
on December 13, 2002.
The Officers of AIPPI Korea met on December 13,
2002 at the Westin Chosun Hotel, Seoul. The officers
reported results of the two recent conferences,
the 2002 Seoul International I.P. Conferences
and the AIPPI Joint Meting of Korea, Japan and
China, which were held from October 10th to 15th,
2002 and discussed the preparations of the forthcoming
2003 AIPPI EXCO/FORUM Meeting. The participants
were Mr. Sung-ki Kim (Secretary), Mr. Sung-taik
Kim (V.P.), Mr. Yang-oh Kim (Treasurer), Mr. Yoon-bae
Kim (President), Mr. Man-ho Song (V.P.), Mr. Kwan-ho
Shin (V.P.), and Mr. Young-pyo Hong (V.P.).
5. AIPPI 2003 EXCO Meeting will
be held from Oct. 12-15, 2003.
The 2003 AIPPI EXCO Meeting will be held at the
Grand Intercontinental Hotel, Seoul on October
12 to 15, 2003.
At the meeting, delegates from each country will
discuss various administrative matters and scientific
matters including the following 3 Questions:
1) Q-173 : Issues
of Co-existence of Trademarks and Domain Names.
2) Q-174 : Jurisdiction
and Applicable Law in thecase of Cross Border
Infringement ofI.P. Rights.
3) Q-175 : The Role
of Equivalents and Prosecution. History in Defining
the Scope of Patent Protection.
6. The 3rd AIPPI World Intellectual
Property FORUM will be held from Oct. 10-12,
2003.
The 3rd AIPPI I.P. World FORUM plans to hold
in the COEX, Seoul, from 10th to 12th October,
2003. Various topics will be addressed during
4 sessions covering the following:
Session I:Issues
of the co-existence of trademarks and domain names:
public versus private international registration
system.
Session II:The role of
equivalents and prosecution history in defining
the scope of patent protection.
Session III:Need to enlarge
patent protection tonew fields of economic activity
(software, business methods, biotechnology, etc)
Session IV:Patent Protection and Commercial ization
in (a) IT and e-business (b) Chemical, and Biotechnology
and (c) Automotive Aerospace Industry.
7. The First Announcement (Brochure)
of the 2003 AIPPI EXCO/FORUM was printed
inNovember, 2002
The First Announcement (Brochure) of the 2003
AIPPI EXCO/FORUM was printed in November of 2002.
One thousand volumes out of a total number of
3,000 volumes issued were distributed in Wellington,
New Zealand during the 47th APAA Council Meeting
